Høvringen & Rondane

Høvringen was originally one of the largest farm hamlets with over 30 summer farms in operation at the most. The first tourists came to the farms in the 1880s and this was the beginning of the tourist area which today characterizes the area.

Høvringen and Rondane has left its traces in Norwegian cultural history. On his journey through Gudbrandsdalen was P. Chr. Asbjørnsen guest on Høvringen in 1842. The stay gave the background to the story of Peer Gynt, who met both Bøygen and troll packing in Rondane. Asbjørnsen adventure "Reensdyrjagd in Rondane" 20 years later formed the basis of Henrik Ibsen's drama "Peer Gynt".

Kristin Lavransdatter in Sigrid Undset's famous novel works the "Wreath" she is with her father in the mountains. Høvringen is here portrayed with a spirit of adventure and superstition. Åsmund Olavson Vinje Rondane has a central role in "Ferdaminne. Later, the tone set Edvard Grieg his poem "At Rondane. Erik Werenskjold, Hans Gude and especially Harald Sohlberg, found the subject of famous painting in the Rondane. "Winter night in Rondane" has been selected as Norway's national painting.
