Rondane National Park

Rondane National Park was established in 1962 as the first national park in Norway. The park is a total of 572 km ², with the Rondane massif in the center - in many people's eyes, the finest and most impressive mountain party in Norway. Rondane National Park is the second most visited mountain areas in Norway after Hardangervidda.

Rondane National Park is a typical mountain area. Large parts of the park lies above 1,445 meters. Ten peaks towering over 2000 meters into the air. Rondeslottet (2178) and Storronden (2138) are the highest.

In the Rondane there are numerous traces of the last glacial period. Narrow valleys, gorges and large patio areas are all reminiscent of the Ice Age. In Rondane is observed in all 124 bird species and 28 varieties of mammals. 20 of these are settled. There are 240 species of higher plants and over 300 varieties of moss and lichen. Wild reindeer in Rondane tribe is the last remnant of the original European wild strain. Reindeer have been in Rondane for thousands of years.

There are many traces of the old hunting culture in Rondane. In several places you can see the old pits for caribou and traces of ancient burial mounds and settlement. The oldest deer tombs dating to the year zero, the current is applied until the 1800's. By Rondvassbu and Smuksjøseter the tourist traps near the fallen. The reindeer pull habits and pastures are the same today as it always has been.
