Cross-country skiing

Our well-groomed trails start at our farmstead and we offer 150 km of signposted trails, over 100 km of which are machine-groomed. Most of the trails are located in high mountain terrain, but we also have plenty of sheltered forest trails for when the wind starts to blow. There are several mountain cafés such as the Peer Gynt Cabin and the Dovre Cabin, where you can pop in and buy refreshments.

For the more experienced skiers, we recommend trips to mountain peaks that are up to 2000 meters above sea level and that can be easily reached on day trips. The sweeping mountain plateaus and the varied terrain attract guests to Øigardseter on their winter holidays year after year.

The snow grooming machine is equipped with GPS which means that guests can check skisporet.no for information about groomed trails.

Øigardseter has a small slope with ski lifts right outside the front door. The slope is a great place for children and beginners to test their skis.

The lift is free for our guests to use.

Snowcat trip to the Rondane mountain area

Take a wonderful 5 km trip in our own snowcat from 1956 to the Rondane mountain area. This is a popular trip with both families with smaller kids and those who want en easy start for a longer ski trip.

Dog sledding

Are you ready for an outdoor experience out of the ordinary? Before setting off, the dogs are always eager to get going and usually bark loudly, but there is no bigger contrast to when we get started and the only sound you hear is the whisper of the sled’s runners underneath you.

Ski lessons and rental

Høvringen Ski school offers both individual lessons and group lessons. The school provides lessons on the practice slope for children, beginners and for those with a little experience.

If you would like to rent skis, snowshoes, sleds or other equipment, Rondane Ski Centre has a good selection of what you will need for your ski trip.

Ski trip to Mysuseter (return by bus)

Would you like to go on a long skiing trip through Rondane National Park and down to Mysuseter? Høvringen Ski School arranges a return bus service from Mysuseter to Høvringen every thursday in 2022 winterseason.

Ice climbing

A day’s ice climbing takes place on suitable waterfalls at Otta or the Gudbrandsdalen Valley. The valleys offer frozen waterfalls of heights between 5 to 280 meters. We primarily use waterfalls that provide all levels of difficulty. Conditions vary throughout the season. This means that the choice of waterfalls will vary. With an ice pick in each hand and crampons on your feet, the only way is up! One person at a time climbs in each rope team, so everyone gets to have a rest between attempts. The activity is energy consuming, and having a good technique is rewarded with longer endurance. This activity suits people who like to be physically active. Ice canyoning

During the winter, water freezes in the local gorges and periodically it is possible to climb up them. Depending on your level of ambition, you can choose to tackle several suitable gorges. The activity resembles glacier hiking, but the ice and snow has a different form and consistency. Using snowshoes, crampons, ice picks and safety equipment, you get to experience a world you’ve never seen before. Trip to Dombås Skiheiser

Would you like a day of downhill skiing? Approximately 40km from Høvringen you find Dombås Skiheiser .

They have two lifts and three good slopes, in addition too children-slopes and a terrain park with different sized jumps and rails.

On foot

We have over 150 km of signposted trails that provide guests with unique hiking opportunities in both varied mountain terrain and in sheltered forest terrain. For those used to hiking in the mountains, Rondane’s low vegetation offers both easy and more demanding trips off the beaten track. Follow the old reindeer trails and experience several well-preserved trapping pits or visit one of Rondane’s many stone cabins.

Many of the trails are of such a quality that visitors can also ride their bikes on them. If you’d rather take a walk or a bike trip on a smoother surface, there are approximately 20 kilometres of good mountain roads and two of them head into the heart of Rondane.

Guests can also enjoy the good quality trails and mountain roads from horseback.

Cycling

Øigardseter has its own bikes that our guests can rent and take on trips along the mountain roads and trails. We are happy to assist in planning your trip for you.

In cooperation with Dovrefjell Adventures it is also possible to rent electric-bicykles with us. Note that it is not allowed with electrical vehicles inside the nationalpark.

Boat trip on Høvringsvatnet Lake

Take the 5 km trip in towards Rondane either by car, bike or on foot, and row out on the beautiful Høvringsvatnet Lake in a rowing boat. Please get in touch with us for more information about boat and life jacket rental.

Fishing

There are a number of mountain lakes and small rivers that offer great fishing opportunities. Here you can catch mountain trout, grayling and char. After buying a fishing license at Høvringen Landhandleri og Kafe (the local shop), you can then take your fishing rod wherever you want. Staff at Øigardseter will be happy to give you some tips on where you can try your luck at fishing.

Would you like to experience the mountains from horseback? There are several companies in the area that offers tourridning in the summer. No mather if you are a total beginner or got lots of experience, they will take you out on an unforgetable tour.

Rafting on the Sjoa River

Heidal Rafting offers trips of different lengths and difficulty on Europe’s best rafting river. You can choose between taking short trips, day trips and family trips. Safety is paramount, and Sjoa Rafting has professional guides. See Heidal Rafting for more information.

Musk ox safari

Full day trips with a certified guide to Dovrefjell, where visitors can experience the fascinating musk ox. There is a café with a toilet and musk ox products at the starting point. The guide has a telescope. Bring a packed lunch, drinks, warm clothes and good outdoor shoes because the trips are over 1000 metres above sea level. See DOVRE & LESJA AKTIV for more information.

Moose safari (evening trip)

Canyoning

Some people are attracted by vertical experiences combined with a wet element. We have made sure that interested parties can carry out this interest in a safe manner. Participants are equipped with a helmet and wetsuit. The trip takes place in a river gorge where participants partake in simple climbing, abseiling, swimming in deep pools and jumping from cliffs. We use different gorges, depending on the desired difficulty and water levels. Participants decide individually how spectacular the canyoning should be. See naturopplevingar.no for more information.

Høvringen cultural trail

At Høvringen, we have created our own cultural trail that includes maps and an information booklet. The trail starts at Høvringen Landhandleri. The trail is approximately 6 km long and it is marked with poles with horseshoes on them. It is also possible to walk along parts of the trail and take longer detours. The cultural trail takes you on a trip that includes everything from great vantage points and beautiful valleys, to natural phenomena such as the Høvringsporten and insight into Høvringen’s history and culture.

Historical farms, cheese makers and stave church

Head south through the Gudbrandsdalen Valley to Sjoa and into the beautiful Heidal Valley. Here, you can visit old farms of historical importance such as Nordre Ekre Farm and Kruke. Visitors can buy tasty, traditional food such as porridge made with sour cream and served with cured meats, or simply a cup of coffee and slice of cake.

Heidal Ysteri (cheese makers) offer guided tours of their premises and provide information about the history of the traditional Heidalosten cheese that is still being made in the ‘old-fashioned way’. The Craftsman’s Farmstead (Håndverkstunet) is located right next to the cheese factory and is known for its high quality, local handicraft products. They sell different types of cheese and also furniture that features traditional carving and rose painting. They also sell forged iron products, ceramics, silver jewellery, turned wooden plates, woven fabrics, woven bedspreads, rugs, hand-knitted products, local food products and much more.

You can end the trip with a visit to Vågå Stave Church which was rebuilt in 1625-30 with materials from the 1150s.

Boat trip over Gjendevatnet Lake along Besseggen

Travel up the Heidal Valley and into Sjodalen Valley to Gjendevatnet lake. This is not just the starting point for hiking up the famous Besseggen mountain ridge. Visitors can also take a fantastic boat trip over Gjendevatnet Lake.

Gjendevatnet Lake is perhaps the largest mountain lake in Norway that is not regulated or subjected to significant human encroachment. Many consider this lake to be the most beautiful lake in Norway. The lake stretches approximately 20 kilometres in towards Jotunheimen from the top of the Sjoadalen Valley. Its average width is approximately 1 km, and mountain walls rise to almost 1300 meters from the edge of the lake.

Enjoy your lunch at Memurubu before driving back alongside the bright green Vågåvatnet Lake.

Glittersjå

Take your family on a visit to Glittersjå Mountain Farm located in the Murrudalen Valley in Heidal. Here you can groom the horses, go horse riding, feed the animals and drive a horse and cart.

Visitors can also go on an exciting walk through the Bear Forest, visit the pigs and wild boars, visit the hens and sheep, pet the hares and enjoy a locally sourced lunch in the cafeteria. Glittersjå Mountain Farm is open from 30 June to 31 August.

Brimiland Climbing Park

Visit Brimiskogen Climbing Park at Brimiland. Everyone has dreamt of being Tarzan, and this climbing park provides you with the opportunity to do just this. They have constructed 60 platforms in existing trees at heights of between 1 to 10 metres. The climbing park is located between Vågå and Lom in the Ottadalen Valley.

The Grimsdalen Valley and Folldal Mines

A bus ride through the Grimsdalen Valley which is one of Norway’s most beautiful mountain valleys. Feel free to take a coffee break at Grimsdalshytta Cabin before continuing on to Folldal.

Visitors can gain an insight into one of Norway’s historical mining communities at Folldal. Feel free to spend the whole day at Folldal Mines where you can take the mining train into Worm’s Hall and visit both the exhibitions and the museum.

There is also the possibility of visiting Hjerkinn on your way home, and the coffee is also good at Dovregubben’s Hall which is located right in the middle of Dovrefjell.

Peer Gynt Farm Road and War Memorial Exhibition

The Peer Gynt Farm Road offers many of the treats that can be found in the mountains of Norway. The highest point can be found at Krøkla, 1109 metres above sea level, which offers great views of both Rondane and Jotunheimen. ‘Mjølbøla’, located right next to the road’s highest point, is constantly covered in snow.

When descending from Krøkla, you pass many idyllic mountain hamlets that are still in operation. You can see a restored water wheel in full operation at Toksesetra. Kvamsnyseter is home to the beautiful Jøråfossen Waterfall. We recommend taking the short detour to Hovde, where a path stretches around Furusjøen Lake. There is also a ferry boat that crosses this lake. You can drive from Rondablikk down the lush Veikledalen Valley to Kvam.

The Gudbrandsdal War Memorial Exhibition is located at Kvam and is a unique exhibition of war, occupation and defence in Gudbrandsdalen. In addition, there is an exhibition about the Scottish Expedition of 1612.
